Course Directors

 

Mr Sam Majumdar -  Mr Sam Majumdar is a full time consultant surgeon at the University Medical School and Ninewells Hospital at Dundee.

He is the lead surgeon for voice and swallowing disorders this centre. Mr Sam Majumdar qualified from the Nottingham University as a mature student. He had previous significant experience in maxillofacial surgery and Fellowship in Dental Surgery from the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Glasgow. Equipped with this, he followed training in Otolaryngology and Head & Neck Surgery. He completed his basic surgical training in Nottingham and higher surgical training on Sheffield (South Yorkshire) rotation. During his medical training he had also completed a degree in science BSc Med Sci (hon) from the university Nottingham looking at genetic expressions of cancer cells. He is a founder member of the British Laryngology Association and at present a council member. Sam has specialist interest in the diseases of the larynx and pharynx (throat) with particular interest in the disorders of Voice and Swallowing function. He is also a pioneer in the development of Transnasal Oesophagoscopy and Laryngopharyngeal Simulation Surgery. He is one of the course directors of the Thiel Cadaveric Advanced Laryngeal & Pharyngeal Surgery Workshop at the Cushieri Surgical Skills Centre (Dundee) https://cuschieri.dundee.ac.uk/courses . He is also the member of teaching faculty of many other courses. Sam also provides regular care for all general Ear, Nose and Throat conditions for adults and children. Sam is a Fellow of the Scottish Patients Safety programme run by the Health Improvement Scotland. He is also the Deputy Lead for Scotland for Quality Improvement (Faculty of Medical leadership and Management). Sam has published widely in the medical literature and peer reviewed journals; presented the national and international academic and given invited & key notes speeches. Sam has published widely in the medical literature on all aspects of ENT surgery and is co-author of chapters on seminal textbooks.

 

Mr Jai Manick - Jai Manick (Jaiganesh Manickavasagam) is a Consultant Ear, Nose and Throat Surgeon at Ninewells Hospital and Medical School, Dundee and Honorary Senior Teacher at Dundee Medical School. Within the ENT Department, he is the lead head,neck and thyroid surgeon with clinical interests in laser surgery and endoscopic thyroid and parathyroid surgery. His clinical practice is devoted to benign and malignant diseases of the head and neck, including the mouth, throat, voice box, neck, salivary glands and the thyroid gland at NHS and private care at Dundee. Mr Manick is one of a few surgeons in the United Kingdom with expertise in Transoral Robotic Surgery and Transoral Laser Microsurgery for head and neck cancers. His research portfolio is primarily comprised of projects concerning the head and neck, rhinology and the skull base. He is also the founding organiser of Dundee FRCS ENT VIVA course (www.frcsentvivacourse.co.uk) and Head and neck conference (www.headandneckconference.co.uk). He is closely associated with ENTMASTERCLASS (www.entmasterclass.com) which is novel teaching platform for otolaryngology training and teaching. He is also editor of the Head and Neck sections in Surgtech(www.surgtech.net). He is very keen on innovation, having published and designed a few new surgical techniques and new devices respectively.

Course Faculty

 

Mr Guri Sandhu - Guri Sandhu graduated from the University of London in 1990 having trained in medicine at The Royal London Hospital. Mr Sandhu’s early surgical training included General Surgery, Neurosurgery and Plastic Surgery. As a Registrar he trained in General ENT principally at The Royal National Throat, Nose and Ear Hospital (RNTNE) and Paediatric ENT at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children. He also undertook a fellowship to the USA, visiting the Cleveland Clinic and Columbia University, concentrating on Airway and Voice problems.

 

Mr Yakubu Karagama - Mr Karagama did his Higher Surgical Training in Newcastle-upon -Tyne where he obtained a certificate of completion of training in ear, nose and throat surgery in 2007. Since that date he has been a registered specialist in ENT surgery with the General Medical Council. He runs the Central Manchester Voice Clinic at Manchester Royal Infirmary, using a high tech Video-Stroboscope to diagnose and treat various voice disorders. He works with expert speech and language therapists in a multidisciplinary team.

 

Mr Mark Watson - Mark trained in Birmingham and Newcastle before joining the Trust in 1992.   He is Lead Clinician for head and neck cancer in the Trust, and has previously served as Clinical Director for Special Surgery, and was Chairman of the Clinical Records Committee for 10 years.

 

Mr Taran Tatla - Qualified from University College London and Middlesex Schools of Medicine, London, UK in 1996. Awarded a scholarship to undertake a BSc in Anatomy with Developmental Biology gaining First Class Honours. Trained in London Hospitals. As one of two ENT-Head & Neck / Thyroid cancer surgeons based at London North West Healthcare NHS Trust, contributes as a core member of the North West London Head & Neck / Cancer multi-disciplinary teams.

 

Mr Gary Walton - Mr Walton graduated in Dentistry in 1984 and Medicine in 1995, He undertook basic surgical training and Specialist Registrar training in the Northwest of England. In 2003 he was appointed to University Hospital Coventry as Consultant Head & Neck & Reconstructive Surgeon and has been instrumental in developing the head & neck microvascular service and has also been a member of the anterior skull base service. He is currently lead clinician and Network Lead for Head & Neck Oncology services in Coventry and the Arden Network.
